Extended Sermons
“Calls for obeying the Lord’s instructions without question or debate even if it doesn’t make sense.” ⇒ How often do we question something the Lord asks? And we think “This doesn’t make sense.” “How is this going to work out.” “What’s the probability of this going to plan.” “Is somebody going to think I’m weird or odd for doing this.” Life often brings us to crossroads where we must choose between the familiar and the unknown. In these moments, trust and faith become our guiding lights. Just as Jesus’ disciples were called to obey and trust His instructions, even when the outcome was uncertain. We too must embrace the unknown with confidence. Even when the path seems unclear and the challenges insurmountable. Even when it feels it’s impossible. Understand Jesus does not send you on failed missions. It may feel like that sometimes. But know this Jesus never sets you up for failure.
Additional Notes & Application
Teaches how Jesus will fulfill in us what He created us to do in carrying His work and glory into the world. We can either buck and resist Jesus, “I don’t want to go”. Or we can submit and serve Jesus in what He desires and created us for.
Opponents of the faith point out that Matthew is the only Gospel that talks about 2 animals. Where Mark & Luke only mention one animal. He also says they put their cloaks on the animals and “Jesus sat on them.” They ridicule the idea that Jesus rode both donkeys! These are the kinds of “contradictions” that make some people shaky in their faith. But if we think this through . . . Just because the colt’s mother is not mentioned by the other Gospels. does not mean it wasn’t there. The other gospel writers spotlight the fact that Jesus rode on the colt, but that does not mean the mother was not there. It would make perfect sense for a mother and foal to be brought together to keep the colt calm. However, the colt is the center of the story. Think of it like you were telling someone about a movie you had gone to see. You tell your friends that the movie stars Matthew McConaughey. Does that mean he is the only person in the movie? Of course not! He is just the one most prominent. Someone else might say it is a great movie with Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. Do either of these accounts of the movie contradict each other? Is either one wrong? No of course not. The conclusion that Jesus rode on both doctrines is also ridiculous. Remember it says, they put their cloaks on the donkeys and he sat on them. Who or what does the word “them” refer to. It makes much more sense if the “them” refers to the garments rather than the donkey’s.
You may be looking at this going, “Sitting on a donkey, a colt of a donkey”. Thinking that seems like a odd thing to do. Wouldn’t you have done something a little bit more grandeur or majestic Jesus? Why don’t you come on a white stallion, that’s going to draw some attention. Or come in with a nice chariot all decked out with hydraulics, get some lifts on this thing, get the lights underneath, stereo blasting, etc. But coming on a young donkey that doesn’t seem to hip. But we need to remember that it was a common practice for a Jewish King to ride on a donkey when coming in peace.-(1-Kings 1:33, Judges 5:10; 10:4; 12:14; and 2 Samuel 16:2.) But if you were going to war or returning in victory, you would ride in on a horse. But by riding on a donkey, Jesus was coming with an offer of peace, peace by dyeing on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. By coming on a donkey Jesus not only shows His Kingship, but also reveals the peaceful nature of His reign as loving and gentle.
