Matthew 12:38………Working
12:38 Then (after miraculously healing the man who was blind & mute-(!2:22-23) some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law (scribes-K.J.V.) said to him, “Teacher, (Expresses a false complement of flattery & respect in order to illicit a response) we want to see a miraculous sign (Sign from heaven-(Luke 11:6) as verifiable and undeniable proof. i.e. Fire from Heaven like Elijah did. Or thunder & lighting as Samuel did-(1-Sam. 7:10) Or the sun to stand still as Joshua did.-( ) from you”. (Not a sincere request, but an excuse to discredit Jesus as being the Messiah once He failed to the test.)

“Warns how building our faith on miracles will always leave us wanting something bigger and better.” ⇒ Miracles are never going to open anybody’s eyes. In fact if anyone saw a miraculous sign, they would want another sign to prove the other sign was really a sign. Miracles were never meant to be the diet that sustains faith, the Word of God is. We should never think that the only way are faith will survive is if we experience some new move of God every time we open our bibles and go to church. Maybe you go to church to experience some over-the-top, well-programmed perfect worship experience to feed your faith. And at first it did feed your faith, but in order to sustain that spiritual high, you needed a little bit more and a little bit more each week, and then when it fell flat your faith falls off a cliff.
“Even today, people will say “If God only performed some sign then I would believe.” Or “If I only had more evidence then I would be convinced.” When in truth they only want to validate their skepticism and justify their unbelief.” ⇒ Like these religious leaders people harden their hearts. They saw something miraculous and they simply just moved the goalpost. Or they say their interested in God. But in their hearts their looking for an excuse to justify their skepticism and avoid any commitment. They can avoid having to wrestle with the reality of sin, the reality of death, and the reality of judgment. It’s puts to much accountability on them and the way they choose to live their lives. For skeptics what’s really holding them back is their sin and pride.
