Matthew 10:37……….Working
“Anyone who loves (Cherishes, cares more for-N.E.B., prefers-M.B.V. Hates-(Luke 14:26) his father or mother more than me (i.e. Not deserving of belonging to Him, or to bear the Christian name.) is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; (Again not of Salvation. But of deserving to be called and honored as a disciple of Jesus.)
Continued From Book
“Warns against putting family loyalty and identity above Jesus. Are you putting your bond to family over your bond to Jesus?”⇔ This was and is today deeply counter-cultural. When it comes to family we all share a tight bond. Its all about family. It’s all about duty and loyalty to family. Not only do we experience this in families. We feel a common bond with country, with friends, with gangs, with social groups. We feel a connection with fellow teammates. But our soul’s identities are not determined by them. We are children of God before other calls upon our lives. It is a matter of priorities. Your family of origin is deeply influential, but for those who follow Christ, not defining! Our Family is made up of the people we do God’s Will with! Life’s deepest bonds will emerge not through bloodlines, but sharing God’s work together.
“Even today, were still to love and care for our family that is until they start to force us to disobey God and do things their way. Or until we start to compromise to keep them happy.” ⇒ When your family wishes conflict with Jesus’ wishes were to follow Jesus. If your family wants you to participate in some evil or unethical behavior you say No! If your family wants you to take some profession or career that doesn’t glorify Christ you say No! If your family wants you to marry some boy who is not a Christian you say No! If your family wants you to attend some pagan festivity or gay wedding you say No!
“Jesus is not encouraging believers to break with their families. But rather if our family is trying to stop, hinder, or draw us away from Him. Or when we’re forced to choose between family and Jesus. In that case were to choose Jesus.” ⇔ This call to leave family only applies if the family that rejects the new convert, not if the family accepts him in his new faith; He must not reject them, because the whole point of Jesus’ coming is to Saves as many people as possible, and who knows maybe the family will convert later on. Even Jesus’ own family resisted early on, then later they came around.
