Matthew 10:34……….Working
10:34 “Do not suppose (think, presume) that I have come (Into the world. see website) to bring peace to the earth. (Jesus did not come to bring world peace or a comfortable and cozy life for His followers.) I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. (Gospel, God’ Word, truth. Metph.-Conflicts, division, opposition, split-ups, ideological differences. Not the purpose of Jesus’ coming in dividing people and families, but rather the effect. The Gospel causes division by the nature of its exclusive message that Salvation is found only in Christ Jesus.)
Continued From Book
“Teaches how following Jesus will bring unavoidable conflict and division.” ⇒ When God’s Word says one thing and those in the family see things differently there is difficulty. Or when you share the Gospel with friends, coworkers, and family members they often assume you think you’re better than them because your telling them about some sin or deficiency in their life. When you share the Gospel with others there is often a view that they think we are somehow better than them. These are the things Jesus is talking about.
“Teaches how Jesus came to cut through those cozy domestic relationships to free us for God.” ⇒ We’re better freed to serve God when relationships are put in their proper place. There comes a time when we need to make a decision between religion and relationships. A decision between getting married and starting a family or serving God.
Jesus’ statement sounds shocking due to the fact that it stands in stark contrast to who He is. Even the bible calls Him the “Prince of Peace.”-(Is.9:6b) Didn’t the angels announce at His birth “Peace on earth and Goodwill to men”.-(Luke 2:14) Didn’t Jesus teach “Blessed are the peace makers.”-(Matt. 5:9) ⇒ But the peace Jesus brings is not world peace, but a inward peace of the soul to those who receive Him. He will bring peace ultimately when He returns to rule and reign over the world.
Additional Notes & Applications
Note: Some Christians have used this scripture incorrectly, to justify war.
Note: This division we will arouse the opposition, not only of others who believe differently, but of those old thoughts in our own consciousness that will strive to maintain their control over us. Therefore we need to be vigilant—not so that we can attack others, but so that we can defend our newfound spiritual empowerment against the shadows that feel threatened by it.
