Matthew 7:28-29…….Working
7:28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, (teachings, preaching, discourse given in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.-{Chps. 5-7} Expresses a structural formula woven within Matthew’s Gospel that marks a transition point from the “First” five-set division discourse that began in 5:1. Suggesting a shift from teaching on discipleship-(Chps. 5-7) to the next phase of Jesus’ ministry of miracles and instructions on Missionary work.-(Chaps. 8-10)) the crowds (i.e. People who had followed Jesus and His disciples up on the mountain to hear His sermon on the mount.-(Matt. 5:1) were amazed (shocked, astonished, speechless, bewildered, blown-away) at his teaching, (i.e. Preaching style, manner, method, exegetical-skills, simplicity. Suggests the crowds were only astonished onlookers with no indication of faith, repentance, or conversion. That they couldn’t reconcile Jesus’ lowly upbring as a carpenter’s son with His spiritual wisdom and preaching skills.-(Matt. 13:55-57) 29 because he taught as one who had authority, (1849-Divine authority, power, right, liberty.) and not as their teachers of the law. (religious scholars, scribes-K.J.V. Expresses how Jesus preached by His own authority and not by reciting or quoting other Rabbis; “You have heard it was said to the people long ago, but “I say” to you”-(Matt. 5:22, 28, 32, 34, 39)
Continued From Book
“Even today, we need to respond to Christ appropriately. We need a reaction that goes beyond just amazement and admiration of Jesus to one that is falling on our knees saying “Lord have mercy on me a sinner who needs to be Saved by you.” ⇒ You have to go further than just being moved by Jesus’ love, teachings, and compassion. It’s not enough to be astonished at how inspiring, motivating, and encouraging Jesus’ words are. It’s not enough to walk away saying how refreshing and uplifting that was. It’s not enough to walk away saying “I’m so glad I was in church to today I really needed to hear this.” Or “These words really hit home to the personal situation i’m going through right now.” But have you falling on your face and accepted Jesus as Lord & Savior? Have you repented and turned from your sins? Have you taken up your cross and truly following Jesus?
