Matthew 4:17……..Ready
17 From that time on (John the Baptist’s arrest. Or Jesus’ move to Capernaum.) Jesus began to preach, (To be a herald, to proclaim.) “Repent, (3340-To have a change of heart, mind, and thinking. Towards sin, holiness, obedience, submission) for (because, reason why) the kingdom of heaven (Christ’s rule, reign, arrival. Or God’s Saving grace, forgiveness, healing.) is near.” (available, right in front of you, a step away, yours for the asking.)

-
Teaches how repentance is more than saying a prayer, or agreeing to certain facts, but about surrendering to the authority and Lordship of Christ. ⇒ If not careful people can fall for what’s called “Easy-believism”. Many think all they have to do is say a prayer or respond to a alter-call without ever really changing. They believe easily in a God who makes no demands, but this is not the God of the Bible. Satan has cleverly misled people by whispering that they can believe in Jesus Christ without being changed, but this is the Devil’s lie. To those who say you can have Christ without giving anything up, Satan is deceiving you.” The gospel call presupposes that sinners must repent of their sin and yield to Christ’s authority.” In other words, a sinner who refuses to repent and change is not Saved, for he cannot cling to his old life and obey the Lord at the same time. And a sinner who rejects Christ’s authority in his life does not have Saving faith, for true faith encompasses total surrender and commitment to God. The object of faith is Christ Himself, not a promise, not a prayer, not a creed. Faith must involve a personal commitment to Christ. It is more than being convinced of the truth of the gospel; it is forsaking sin & self and a following of the Master. A person who is truly following the Lord, will abide in God’s Word and obey the Lord’s instructions. A person who is living in willful, unrepentant sin will not follow Christ, because Christ calls us out of sin and into a life of righteousness and holiness. This is not saying were expected to live perfect lives. We may stumble and fall at times, but we remain dedicated and committed to Christ.
-
Teaches how you can’t claim Jesus as Lord & Savior and not allow Him to rule and run your life. ⇒ Many will let Jesus have the title of Lord of their life, but in reality they don’t want Him to do much, that they would rather run they’re life their way with no interference from Him. Or they’ll accept Jesus as a friend, helper, and big brother but never as Lord. You hear it quite often. For example they’ll say: “I want Jesus to be the lord of my home, but I don’t want him to tell me how to run my life. Or I’m all for obeying the Lord’s will, but when it comes to marrying a Christian mate that’s my decision.” Or “I’m all for tithing to the Church.” But when it comes to giving to the work of the Lord “This is my money and I worked hard for it, so the church is only getting the 10% it asks for.” (cf. Matt. 7:21-23, John 14:15-21)
-
Note: The word “Repent” here is in the present tense, meaning something that is not only urgent, but continual. It is also a verb calling for action, submission, and obedience.
-
Note: Repentance is more than just a change of mind towards sin and God, it’s more than just a conviction of sin, though it certainly starts there and an essential first step. We also need to go the next step in turning from sin to following God. (A repentance that is not following, serving, and living for God is no repentance at all.)
-
Note: Repentance does not need to be perfect in order to be genuine. It does not need to be perfect in order to be sincere. But no one is repentant who refuses his heart to Christ. No one is repentant who refuses his devotion, submission, and obedience to Christ.
-
Note: Though “Repentance” may conjure up feelings of gloom & doom, but it is really an invitation of coming home to the Father, that God is waiting with arms wide open. (Instead of running away from God you can run into His loving arms, confident that He forgives you and has made a way home for those who want to come home through the Saving work of His Son Jesus Christ on the Cross!) (cf. Luke 15:11-24)
Note: Even today when it comes to repentance we need to ask ourselves; “Who is the King of my life, Me or Christ”? “What areas of my life have I not given to God”? “What places have I not surrendered to the Lordship of Christ”? “Where have I been going through the motions with no real heart commitment to Christ”?
Note: Jesus’ preaching ministry begins with the same essential message as John the Baptist: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”-(Matthew 3:1–2). But whereas John preached a message of repentance in preparation for the coming of the Messiah, Jesus did so as the Messiah Himself. Jesus not only called people to repent, but also to follow and submit their hearts and lives over to Him as Lord and King. (cf. 4:18-22, Matt. 6:33, Acts. 20:21, Rom. 14:17, 1-Corn. 4:20, 6:9-11, 1-Thess. 2:12)
Note: Even though Jesus only says to “Repent” and says nothing about “Faith” does not exclude one from the other. Repentance and faith always go hand and hand, they’re really two sides of the same coin. Saving faith is not just a mental acknowledgment or adjustment, but a sincere and heartfelt response that turns from sin to trusting and following Christ. (cf. Eph. 2:8-9, 2-Tim. 2:22-26)
